Physical Therapy FAQs

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about physical therapy. If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to us directly.

  • Do I need a referral to see a pelvic floor PT?

In New York State, you can see a licensed physical therapist without a physician referral for the first 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first. Many people are surprised to learn they can get started right away — no referral needed to begin care.

  • When is the right time to start pelvic floor PT during pregnancy?

Ideally, pelvic floor PT can begin at any point in pregnancy. Many practitioners recommend starting in the second or third trimester for birth preparation, pelvic pain management, and learning breathing and pushing techniques. Early intervention can also support those experiencing pelvic girdle pain or bladder symptoms earlier in pregnancy.

  • How soon after delivery can I start postpartum pelvic floor PT?

Most providers recommend an initial postpartum assessment around 6 weeks for vaginal births and 8 weeks for cesarean births — though this can vary. Some PTs offer earlier consultations. Check with your individual provider about their approach and timeline.

  • What does a pelvic floor PT session actually look like?

Sessions are individualized and conducted in a private, respectful environment. They typically include a full health history, movement assessment, and may include an internal or external pelvic exam (always with your consent). Your PT will work with you to create a plan tailored to your goals and comfort level.

  • How do I know if my child might benefit from pediatric PT?

If you've noticed that your baby consistently favors turning their head in one direction, has difficulty with tummy time, seems to lag behind developmental milestones, or your pediatrician has flagged concerns about muscle tone or motor development — a pediatric PT evaluation is a great next step. Early intervention makes a meaningful difference.

  • Is physical therapy covered by insurance?

Each Kindred Connection affiliate manages their own practice independently, including insurance panels, payment options, and rates. We recommend reaching out directly to the provider you're interested in — or visiting their website — to get accurate, up-to-date information about what they accept. Many providers also offer telehealth options, sliding scale fees, or out-of-network superbills, so don't hesitate to ask.
